The U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary and his delegation was in a ten day mission involving visiting four African countries which are receiving funding through the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PERFAR) namely South Africa, Mozambique, Rwanda and Tanzania.

The visit comes on the heels of President Bush’s call to the Congress to support his efforts to double the initial funding of the Emergency Plan as it begins to consider reauthorization. These site visits apart from reinforcing partnership with the countries, they will also allow Secretary Leavitt to assess the impact of U.S government-sponsored programs in Africa.

Through the PERFAR program, the US government is supporting treatment for 1.1 million people worldwide, more than a million of them in Africa. THANE project is one of the projects within Tanzania that are receiving such funding.

THANE Project is a project of the School of Nursing of Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences in collaboration with the School of Nursing of University of California – San Francisco. Its main goal is to strengthen pre-service HIV training for nursing students in Tanzania.

Secretary Leavitt and his delegation visited the THANE Project during its first in the series of zonal training for the Eastern zone. They met with 25 Nurse Educators/Tutors from 12 Nursing Training Schools from the Eastern Zone which is made up of 3 Regions, which are Dar es Salaam, Coast and Morogoro Regions.
