The Kagera AIDS Research Project

Future studies

The aim of these studies is to better understand the reasons for the observed changes in the HIV epidemic in the region and to evaluate the role of different intervention activities on them. In order to achieve this aim, the following sub-studies have been proposed:

  • Cross-sectional survey of to assess HIV-prevalence, and patterns of sexual behaviour as well as their trends.
  • Follow-up studies to estimate the incidence of HIV infection in the region to further assess trends.
  • A study to map current and past interventions in Kagera with a view of using the information to evaluate community interventions
  • A study of how HIV-interventions have reached the poor in Kagera
  • A study on strategies for promoting sexuality and reproductive health education focusing on literary works.
  • Studies to evaluate the HIV testing strategies that are being used in the region.
  • Studies to evaluate community interventions using ecological case-referent approaches and utilizing both aggregated and individual level data.
