KARP -
The Kagera AIDS Research Project

Japhet Killewo (MBCHB, DPH, MSc, PhD), Principal investigator and Associate Professor in Epidemiology, Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences. He has been the head of the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics between 1986 and 1997, Program Manager, MUHAS Programme Management Unit between 1997 and 1999. He became the head of the Reproductive Health Programme at ICDDR, Bangladesh, October 1999 - 2000 after taking a leave of absence from MUHAS. He returned to MUHAS in July 2003 where he continues to teach and conduct research in various fields including HIV/AIDS.
Killewo has published widely in local as well as international journals and books. There are more than 42 published articles in journals, 18 of which he is the first author. Topics of publications include infectious disease epidemiology, environmental health, reproductive health, STDs and HIV/AIDS, review articles and book chapters. Other publications include more than 24 papers and reports in a variety of topics most of which have ended up being published in international journals as well as in conference proceedings.
Killewo has been the Principal Investigator of the Kagera AIDS Research Project (KARP) within the TANSWED programme supported by SIDA (SAREC) since its start in 1987. He is also engaged in reproductive health research projects supported by EU and USAID and in a Reaching the Poor Program of the World Bank.
