The Kagera AIDS Research Project

Joe Lugalla, PhD, is a Social Scientistwho currently works as a Professor in the Department of Anthropology at the University of New Hampshire, Durham, USA. From 1982 to 1994 he was a member of the academic staff in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at the University of Dar- es-Salam, Tanzania where he headed the department from 1991 to 1994. Professor Lugalla has also worked as a visiting professor/ researcher at the Centre for Social Policy at the University of Bremen, University of Vienna and Johannes Keppler University in Linz, Austria, Harvard Medical School, Boston, USA and University of Wageningen in the Netherlands. His main areas of research are on urbanization, development, poverty, social dimensions of population issues, social stratification and social inequality in sub-Saharan Africa. He has also carries out extensive research on issues that relate to gender, international health, international development, HIV/AIDS, medical anthropology, structural adjustment and globalization.
