The Kagera AIDS Research Project

Maria Emmelin, PhD, Senior lecturer, Epidemiology and Public Health Sciences, Department of Public Health and Clinical Medicine, Umeå University. Maria Emmelin is a teacher in qualitative methododology and medical sociology within the Master of Public Health programme. She is also the Managing Editor of Scandinavian Journal of Public Health. Maria Emmelin has been a member of the TANSWED programme since 1993 and the administrative project co-ordinator since 1996. Since 2004 she is the Principal Investigator on the Swedish side. Her own thesis in epidemiology, defended in 2004, focused on community interventions and the role of self-rated health in their evaluation. Apart from her involvement in the TANSWED programme she is part part of the department's bilateral collaborations with Ethiopia (reproductive health studies), South Africa (teaching and qualitative studies) and Indonesia (women's health). Maria Emmelin has published 10 papers in international journals and two are submitted for publication. She has 8 other publications published as research reports or book chapters.
