Stig Wall, Professor
of Epidemiology and Health Care Research since 1986. Head of the Division
of Epidemiology and Public Health Sciences, Umeå university, Sweden
since 1986 and of Umeå International School of Public Health since
2001. Director, WHO Collaborating Centre on Epidemiological Surveillance
and Public Health Training since 2003.
Scientific Adviser to the National Board of Health and Social Welfare since 1987 and Board member of its Epidemiological Centre, EpC, since 1993. Member of the Swedish Council for Social Science Research, SFR, and chairman of its Peer Review Committee for public health research 1990-98. Chaired the working group on Epidemiologic Research - structure, potentials and needs, jointly appointed by the Social and Medical Research Councils 1994-95. Chaired the Swedish Epidemiological Association 1996-98. Has served as temporary adviser to the WHO and been a member of its steering committees for tropical disease research and intersectoral action for health project. Has chaired Sida/SAREC´s peer review committee for biomedical and public health research and been a member of peer-review committees at the Swedish Council for Coordination of Research, the National Cancer Fund and the Swedish Foundation for Health Care Sciences. He was member of the programme committee of INCLEN, International Clinical Epidemiology Network, 1998-2000 and is Deputy Chair of the Scientific Advisory Committee of INDEPTH, the International Network of Demographic Surveillance Sites since 2003. Since 2000 he is Editor-in-Chief of Scandinavian Journal of Public Health. He has been the external expert for the appointment of 14 professorships in epidemiology or public health related fields and has served as member of teams to assess several national and international research institutes. He has published about 220 scientific works on international health, epidemiological methods, environmental health, prevention and medical technology assessment of which 160 international articles. He has edited or contributed to about 30 textbooks or official documents in the field of public health research and health policy. Has supervised 21 completed academic thesis works, 10 as a principal supervisor, and 7 on-going. |
