KARP -
The Kagera AIDS Research Project

Willy Urassa (MD, MSc, MMED, PhD) is a senior lecturer in Microbiology and Immunology at the Dept of Microbiology and Immunology, Muhimbili University College of Health Sciences, which he joined in 1988. His major research field is Immunology of HIV infection with special interests in laboratory diagnostic strategies, cellular immune responses and laboratory markers of HIV disease progression. On the bacteriology side he has interest in monitoring of bacterial resistance to anti-microbial agents and sexually transmitted infections especially among youth.

He is currently involved in collaborative research projects with the Karolinska Institute and Umea University in Sweden, Harvard School of Public Health, and Bergen University. Recently he has joined the field of development and evaluation of HIV vaccine candidates in a project funded by the European Union. He has published 33 articles in peer- reviewed medical journals. In the TANSWED HIV programme he is involved in several research projects mainly in diagnostics. He joined the KARP since 1995 where his main role is supervision of HIV and syphilis testing.
