Symposium: Updates on Research in Sickle Cell Disease in Tanzania: Genomics and Gene Therapy
Date: Friday, 22 March 2019
Time: 10.30 am - 12pm
Venue: MPL Board Room, 1st Floor, MPL Building C, MUHAS.
Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a genetic disorder that has been recognized as a public health priority by the World Health Organization. It is common (300,000 global annual births, Tanzania 5th Country; 11,000); causes high mortality (up to 6.6% of overall under-five mortality). Tanzania has included sickle cell disease in the national strategy for control and management of Non-Communicable Diseases. Advances in health has shown that effective interventions are available (newborn screening and comprehensive care could prevent 70% of childhood deaths).
There have been significant advances in research to improve the burden of sickle cell disease and recent research evidence has shown promising results in genomics, with reports of success in cure of sickle cell disease using gene therapy.
Tanzania has made progress in developing and participating in research in sickle cell disease. MUHAS aims to provide an update of past, present and proposed research that has had health benefits as well as the strategy that MUHAS has developed to generate scientific knowledge that can contribute to discoveries in genomic research and precision medicine in Tanzania, Africa and globally.
