Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS) in collaboration with the University of Oslo (UiO), Norway have been awarded a total of NOK 17,199,000.00 (Equivalent to US$ 2,097,439.00) by the Norwegian Research Council as part of it is Global Health and Vaccination (GLOBVAC) initiative.
The awarded grant will implement a project titled: “PREPTA- Pragmatic Trial for HIV Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis Roll-Out in Tanzania” for the period 2019-2022. Prof. Elia John Mmbaga from MUHAS and Prof. Kare Moen from UiO will lead PEPTA to test innovative approaches including e-platform to enhance the delivery and uptake of Truvada® for HIV Pre-exposure prophylaxis among populations at high risk of HIV infection in Dar es salaam and Tanga.
The project will employ a stepwise phased approach which will include initial formative assessment followed by intervention mapping and culminate in a Pragmatic Quasi-Experimental study. The ultimate goal of PREPTA is to contribute into the government efforts to lower the HIV transmission rates among key population and achieve the 90-90-90 goal.
